Dermatology

Skin conditions are common in dogs and cats and can significantly impact their comfort and quality of life. Our Advanced Veterinary Medical Center team provides dermatology services to diagnose and treat a wide range of skin issues, including infections, allergies, parasites, and more.

Care for common dermatologic conditions

Our team handles pets with skin, ear, and coat conditions daily. Common conditions we treat include:

  • Allergies
  • Fleas, ticks, mites, and other parasitic diseases
  • Bacterial and fungal skin infections
  • Moist focal dermatitis (hot spots)
  • Ear infections
  • Oily or dry skin flaking (seborrhea)
  • Pemphigus, lupus, and other autoimmune skin conditions
  • Hair loss or thinning

Advanced Diagnostics and Treatments A correct diagnosis is critical for successful treatment of skin conditions. We use physical exam findings, medical history, and diagnostic test results to pinpoint the cause of your pet’s discomfort. Sometimes, we must look past the skin and assess their overall systemic health to find the problem. Diagnostics may include:
  • Skin scraping
  • Skin cell evaluation (cytology)
  • Fungal or bacterial culture
  • Skin biopsy
  • Allergy testing
  • Allergy food trial
  • Blood work

The background is a blurred garden setting, enhancing the focus on the cat's facial features and expression—an image that would delight any veterinarian appreciating feline grace. Two schnauzers with gray and white fur are lying on green grass. The dog in the foreground sits up, looking attentively forward, like a vigilant vet on duty, while the other lies behind. Both relish the sunny day.

Once we understand your pet’s condition, we’ll work with you to develop an individualized treatment plan. Many chronic skin conditions, including allergies, require long-term treatment and condition management. In these cases, we use a multimodal treatment strategy that may include topical, oral, and injectable medications and supplements to control symptoms.

We stay on top of the latest research and advances regarding the treatment of skin conditions, including targeted anti-itch drugs, allergy testing and immunotherapy, and new parasiticides, so we can best help your pet.
